A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
