Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior official commented the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
