Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
