The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
