In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant explosions shaking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
