Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
