The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
