The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Between Rock Generations

It has been two decades after Guitar Hero debuted across the Atlantic, offering everyday gamers the tools to feel like rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try convincing someone who's nailed the epic lengthy instrumental break in front of a packed living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with a song. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable series which made a significant impact on numerous of the artists included, introducing decades-old groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain it would fail. But once the game became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was the number of parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived older hits back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ tag. It gave our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album was still not available stateside, so Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles that focused on their music collections and associated lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money compared to their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 copies upon release, while sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. This track is difficult enough on the hardest setting, let alone performed at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated it took nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you should use a real gun and go to war,” notes musician Herman Li.

DragonForce had already wrapped up a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, but Li says it made them a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums like crazy,” he says. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it has risked eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier marketing, be it for automobiles, apparel or video games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of being a music icon on the stage. From day one, the co-founders believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to do it”.

Most installments were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s set to be a new product from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has begun production on their first music game. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome another game following the classic?

“Our team believed those games might become like Madden where you can releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to persist with new generations.”
